Thing #23 Summary

What were your favorite discoveries or exercises on this learning journey?
I liked the bloglines subscription the best because I hadn't done that before.

How has this program assisted or affected your lifelong learning goals?
I enjoy doing all these things and it is always good to be on top of technology.

Were there any take-aways or unexpected outcomes from this program that surprised you?
I am proud of my new blog.

What could we do differently to improve upon this program’s format or concept? And last but not least…
I don't know. It was fun.

If we offered another discovery program like this in the future, would you again choose to participate?
Sure.

Thing #22 Podcasts

I found a useful teenlibrarian podcast to subscribe to.

http://www.teenlibrarian.com/blog.html

I like podcasts that include interviews. Author interviews are cool and directly relevant to my job.

Thing #21 YouTube

I realize this has nothing to do with the library but Griffin is a dog that visits the dog park I go to on a regular basis. We always talk about how he is so ugly so one day one of my dog park friends took this video and posted it on youtube so that everyone else can see it too.

Thing #20 The Machine

I loved this video! I was actually thinking of recommending it when I heard about the 23 things program but I never got around to it.

I think it will help a lot of people "get" Web 2.0. If you haven't used the internet in this way it will be an enlightening experience.

Thing #19 Digital Music

Have you ever tried downloading music from an online store? yes, I use iTunes.

Have you ever tried using a file sharing site? yes, I have used several.

Would you consider using a file sharing site? yes, as long as it's legal.

I used napster when it first came out. I've used other music downloading programs as well but tend to shy away from them now because of the legal concerns. I like to "sample" music online and then purchase it from a legitimate site or store so that the artist gets proper credit.

Thing # 18 Social Networking

Find me here: www.myspace.com/morganannie
and here: http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=510131035

I think it is SO awesome that the presidential candidates have myspace pages. I have seen tons of people adding their favorite candidate as their friend on myspace. It is a cool way to show your support and political beliefs.

They are reaching a whole new generation by being a part of myspace. When I first saw a political figure on myspace (I think it was Senator McCain) I sort of laughed and thought it was useless for him to try and gain respect/followers through myspace. Boy was I wrong. Not all myspace users venture out into the www very far. They might not even know about (or care to look at) sites such as cnn.com or msnbc.com. The candidates couldn't wait for the myspace generation to come to them, so they went stratight to myspace.

Thing #17 Wikis

Create a blog post about your findings. What did you find interesting? What types of applications within libraries might work well with a wiki?

I think wikis are great ways to share and access information. I recently went to a gaming conference in Chicago sponsored by ALA. The wiki was event based. I accessed the site many times before the conference, during the conference and after. It has basically taken the place of a paper program. It even had a chat function that we could use while at the conference to chat with other attendees.

You can find it here: http://gaming.techsource.ala.org/index.php/Main_Page

I think KDL could use wikis. It would be a great staff resource tool. The subs could use it as well instead of the folders they have that holds all the branch info.

Thing #16 Technorati - ugh.

I don't like Technorati. I think it is disorganized and "busy". I also find that there are a lot of things on the page that don't interest me in the least.

I think the webpage is geared toward "techies" and I am not totally into that stuff...so...I don't use it that often.

Thing #15 Delicious!

Well - I swear I didn't look ahead to "thing 15" when I did "thing 14" because I just posted about http://del.icio.us in my last post. Anyway. Here is my delicious account: http://del.icio.us/morganannie

I have already described why I like it. I will add that I can see research assistance potential with this site. The "Hidden Web" is located among a lot of these web pages that I have bookmarked. Things that reside on these pages can never be pulled up by a google search (such as coloring pages and adobe text). When you tag it correctly in delicious, it can be used by you in the future but also by others who find your tag to be useful.

Thing #14 Best of Web 2.0

Funny site: http://www.onesentence.org/
Site most used: http://www.youtube.com
Other sites I like:
http://www.facebook.com
http://answers.yahoo.com

The one I will blog about: http://del.icio.us
What did you like or dislike about the tool? I like it because it allows me to have my bookmarks no matter what machine I am using. I can access them from any internet connection.
What were the site’s useful features? I like the tagging features. I also like that you can view what other people have bookmarked. I get a lot of my bookmarks from there.
Could you see any applications for its use in a library setting? I have used delicious for library purposes. When we were reviewing teen websites before the KDL website redesign we would bookmark the pages in our delicious accounts and tag them "foreric" so that Eric DeHaan could access them later.

Thing #13 ZoHo Writer

I like ZoHo Writer because of all the templates it offers. Also, if someone is using a mac and someone else has a PC (gasp) they can share info using this website.

This was submitted with ZoHo Writer's publishing tool.

Thing #12 Rollyo

Here is my news search on Rollyo: http://rollyo.com/morganannie/news/

I like it because I can search news stories and see which websites have the latest info.

I also like this because it allows me to see how the different websites present the news stories.

I don't think I will use it all that often because I use google A LOT! And I find it to be satisfactory unless I am doing a specialized search.

Thing #11 LibraryThing vs. GoodReads

My LibraryThing account:
http://www.librarything.com/catalog/morganannie

I don't like it as much as www.goodreads.com because it limits you to 200 books on a free account.

Also, goodreads.com has better social networking tools. I get emails on a regular basis when my friends on goodreads update their pages.

Thing #10 Library 2.0

To me, Library 2.0 is a fresh perspective on a lot of old school library practices. Listening to library patrons is not a new concept but allowing them to post on library webpages and subscribe to library RSS feeds is.

Web 2.0 has obviously influenced Library 2.0. Without blogs, wikis and RSS feeds, users could not access all that the library now has to offer. Once our new webpage is launched, hopefully these services will become more prominent and popular.

Thing #9 RSS feeds cont.

I chose a few cool library related blogs for my bloglines reader.
They are:
http://www.theshiftedlibrarian.com/
http://www.unshelved.com/
http://www.hpana.com/ (the Harry Potter Automatic News Aggregator)

I knew about these blogs before subscribing to bloglines so all I had to do was search for them :)

Thing #8 Bloglines

Find my blog roll here: http://www.bloglines.com/public/morganannie

My favorite is dictionary.com's word of the day. The word of the day for Thursday, August 16 is "tattoo".

Does that mean I should get one?

Thing #7 Foster, Warholized

This is my dog, Foster "Warholized".

This is activity #7.

Thing #6 My trading card

It intrigues me that there are people out there who come up with this stuff.

Get your own here: http://bighugelabs.com/flickr/deck.php

Oh. And this is for activity #6. I see that it also qualifies for #7 but I will do something different for that one.

Thing #5 Sully's a good boy

In this picture, Sully (a 2 year old standard poodle) is interrupted from his job of listening to a young boy read by an obnoxious picture taker.

Sully's favorite part of the rough readers program at the Walker branch of KDL was the giant treats the kids gave him after they read to him.

Thing #3 The Hardest Part

The hardest part of the 7 1/2 Habits of Highly Successful Lifelong Learners for me is the first part. I don't often "begin with the end in mind". I often dive into the pool not knowing how deep the water is.

However, knowing that this exercise is for work (and will hopefully end with me receiving a free mp3 player) I can easily do that this time around.
